The comparison between experiential family therapy and narrative family therapy can be drawn as follows:
- According to experiential family therapy, the normal development of a family occurs when family members are offered freedom to be themselves, and the family is considered to be the place to share experiences. On the other hand, narrative family therapists avoid prescribing what the normal development of a family is composed of. They tend to believe that people have inherently good intentions and can create empowering narratives and stories once they are separated from their internalized cultural myths. Experiential Vs Narrative Family Therapies
- Experiential family therapy strengthens the self-expression of an individual by dropping down defenses and exploring the feelings that drive one’s behavior. It helps the members of a family to interact with one another as their most authentic selves. Narrative family therapy comprises interventions in the form of questions that fosters a sense of partnership with their clients. It helps the members of a family to deconstruct their life stories that are essentially pessimistic and bring about change.
- Experiential family therapy is committed to promoting emotional well-being rather than problem-solving. Narrative family therapy is aimed at externalizing one’s problems and focusing on their effects rather than what actually caused them. Experiential Vs Narrative Family Therapies
- Experiential family therapy undermined the role that family plays in regulating an individual’s emotional experience. Narrative family therapy overlooks familial conflicts and tensions that do not get resolved only by fighting an externalized problem.
Family therapy is based on the assumption that the dominant forces that shape an individual’s personality are located externally. The therapeutic intervention is conducted by introducing changes in the family structure, patterns of interaction, hierarchies, boundaries, roles, and rules the members adhere to Experiential Vs Narrative Family Therapies
